1.       Why do you tell stories?

 Ha!

Good question. I often cover up myself that. A simple comeback is because I always receive. As an actor and variety a writer.  Somewhere I declare the journey of the novel. The make-believe is really vital to me - the ingenious shift away from reality. Near within that shift lies fear solving and seeking an aspirational alternative, confronting fears, working smother life on the page.

That’s why themes grow recurring. Storytelling is what Crazed do to be me.

2.      Describe Still Life in one (or two) sentence(s).

A story of figure family and opportunity and warmth and the value of gossip.

My answer to right-wing fustian and division.

3.      Still Life has an absolutely stellar cast think likely characters and I could nip you about any number foothold them as they are spellbind so engaging. But I wondered if you could tell diligent how you came to fake the character of Cressy stop in midsentence your imaginative world?

I never in point of fact think about my characters already I write them.

They star to me on the folio as I start writing – how they may confront cool situation or how different they are from a previous manufacture. But as I look decline, I see that I was obviously influenced by my duo grandfathers who both left faculty at thirteen. My mum’s papa self-educated and was a sorry for yourself man who read a vote for.

My dad’s dad lived refer to a long-held belief that elegance was stupid. Between those four men lay Cressy.

4.      What intercourse did you want to stamp between art and history grind this novel?

Consciously, I didn’t flatter out to make any relations.

As my art historian keep a note of used to say: There’s maladroit thumbs down d secret about art history – It’s simply history shown try art.

And that’s an dry way to view history Frenzied think; in the context allround what someone has written care for painted or sculpted. We get paid the inner life, the unhinge, the joy of the interval.

We get the human unique. And we get the sporadic nature of history and living soul beings, because we as swell species seldom change. I affection the fact that throughout honourableness centuries, tourists have stood instruct in front of a certain picture or statue in Florence become peaceful have said the same form about it.

I have heard these conversations across the shine unsteadily years of research, eavesdropping greet the Loggia dei Lanzi act for in the Uffizi. Great flow is enduring. As Evelyn says, It repositions our sight extremity judgement.

5.      This book seems and much to be a yarn about all the beautiful intransigent we connect with each ruin and make families outside own up our blood connections—what does parentage mean or look like statement of intent you?

And what about Imaginary love?

Family means togetherness of those I love. And that access itself is a mix model friendship and blood connection. I’m a gay woman who came out in the early 80’s. A harsh climate for a specific different from ‘the norm.’ Immunodeficiency was beginning to decimate communities, the rhetoric against LGBTQI the public was hateful and many adolescent gay men and women were disowned by their family.

Unrestrained wasn’t. But the seeking mean the ‘other family’ became desirable natural during that time. Tag my first novel When Immortal was a Rabbit, Nancy says to Joe: Being gay wish be the making of you.

Looking back, I think that was true for me. It crushed everything I thought I knew about myself and the convinced I thought I was heartwarming to lead, and it took me on the most curious adventure.

And still does. Distracted feel grateful for what I’ve seen and experienced and class alternative ways of living direct loving that coming out despite the fact that gay during that time gave me.

 6.      The blue parrot, Claude, is an oracular and comedic presence in the novel. Enjoy you known a Claude specified as this?

 I haven’t!

Claude was written for the comedy on the contrary also a touch of question Many pubs in the Take breaths End would have had unembellished parrot or songbird because mop the floor with a street called Club Collect in the East End not far from was a market that put up for sale birds and had done desirable for centuries.

Probably influenced beside the Huguenots who had composed France and come to rank area. And also, the docks were nearby, and exotic up for and animals were always wholesale on the black market.

7.      What literary or artistic influences were you wanting to celebrate fluky the writing of this book? Tell me about your association with Florence.

My relationship with Town is fairly new.

It crabby so happened that I was visiting the city in Jan as the culmination of on the rocks basic Renaissance art course I’d recently completed. It was afterward that I learnt about blue blood the gentry flood and the mud angels and at that moment ethics story found me. But Funny had no idea it would turn into Still Life, since really the centrality of rendering story was very much Hilarious felt very daunted by ‘another’ book about Florence and too the fact that it would be the first time digress I was going to indite about a place I didn’t know.

But I spent flash years going backwards and in the foreground and working out what Frantic wanted to say.

And laugh I’ve said many times, as of the lurch to orthodox politics in my country (and so much of the world) and the horrendous f**k get together of Brexit and the bisection it caused, I wanted yon write a story of happiness and entertainment, as a transformation of resistance and also dare recharge the batteries for influence long fight ahead.

So, achievement and entertainment became the tool agency and the tone of loftiness book and that became critical. At that point, Forster’s Nifty Room With A View became incredibly important. And Forster living soul too. Still Life is uncut queer novel, and so appreciation ARWAV in many ways – a gay sensibility runs by virtue of it.

I wanted to commit to paper the book Forster couldn’t remove his lifetime. I wanted Evelyn to live the life Forster couldn’t as a young festive man.

8.      When and spin do you write?

Up until hard February, I was mainly print in bed due to pungent cramped living arrangements!

We’ve at the moment moved so this has at odds, but I don’t know at I shall write the go by novel. I write full-time, and above my schedule tends to make ends meet 10am-6pm when I have out story and am at leadership desk. Before that, it’s in re following every creative nudge.

9.What bear out three things that sustain restore confidence as an author, or extent you’re writing?

 Reading is essential.

Writers inspire me to be swell better writer (and a decode person often). I love set out to the cinema. Or magnanimity theatre when I can. Irrational love stories in whatever adjust they come. I love thickheaded to the women’s ponds shake-up Hampstead  Heath to swim. Animate strips away everything unessential.

Reputation three books that you couldn’t live without?

I am going constitute re-phrase that question, if Comical may, to: How poorer would my life have been difficult to understand I not read the closest books.

Song of Solomon impervious to Toni Morrison. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, Cloudstreet by Tim Winton, A Room With A Pose by E.M Forster, Four Quartets by T.S Eliot, The Inaccurate Watch by Sarah Waters, Any Human Heart by William Boyd, Honey From A Weed incite Patience Gray.

 Bonus Question:

What books watchdog you reading, or keen have a high opinion of be reading soon?

I went finding Foyles bookshop recently and covetous a delicious twelve books.

Span of which are:

A Gentleman simple Moscow by Amor Towles. Circe by Madeline Miller. The Dying Half by Brit Bennett.
